Living day to day, struggling against cold and hunger, while hiding from the dangerous Cossacks, a nine-year old boy named Fivel and his family struggle just to survive. A Bridge to America tells the riveting tale of a Polish family’s long and arduous journey from Europe to America. Based on a true story, life in the shtetl and the events that lead to the family's new life as American immigrants are told from the perspective of Fivel.

Although Pa left for America years earlier, a hopeful mother and children wait hopefully that he will send for them. Dealing with extreme conditions of poverty and violence in their small village, the family must pull together and rely on friends for survival. When Pa finally sends money for the family's passage to join him, the story continues with new hardships of travel and fitting in with a new people and country.

Author Linda Glaser presents a beautiful and heartfelt portrait of the life of a member in her community that inspired her to share his story. By giving readers an in-depth look at the conditions of life for immigrants that made it to freedom in America, she presents key themes of cultural awareness and appreciation throughout this novel.

Packed full of educational materials for young minds, a teacher’s guide is offered by the author. In addition, a Yiddish glossary is included at the end of the book along with photographs and information about the real Fivel and his family. A Bridge to America has proven to be an engaging and enlightening book that would be a great addition to any child’s library.
